Operation Malayisha Targets Overloaded Vehicles

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety marked Reconciliation Day with decisive action on road safety, launching Operation Malayisha in the early hours of Monday, 16 December 2025.

The operation commenced at 04:00 at the Zebediela Traffic Control Centre, where law-enforcement officials focused on identifying and removing overloaded vehicles from major routes. By early morning, 17 overloaded vehicles had been stopped and taken off the road. Authorities confirmed that the vehicles will be detained at the centre until their loads are corrected and the prescribed fines are paid.

Officials said the operation forms part of intensified festive-season road-safety measures aimed at reducing accidents, protecting road infrastructure and ensuring safer travel for all road users. Overloaded vehicles are a known risk factor, contributing to brake failure, tyre bursts and serious crashes, particularly during peak holiday traffic.

The Department emphasised that enforcing compliance is not only about law enforcement, but also about responsibility and care for fellow road users. Launching the operation on Reconciliation Day carried added significance, as authorities called on motorists to reflect on shared responsibility and unity.

“Safe and responsibly loaded journeys are part of building a reconciled and safer Limpopo,” the Department said in a statement, urging transport operators and drivers to respect load limits and adhere to road-traffic regulations.

Motorists were encouraged to plan their journeys carefully, ensure vehicles are roadworthy and comply with all safety requirements as travel volumes increase over the festive period.

Operation Malayisha will continue across the province as part of ongoing efforts to keep Limpopo’s roads safe, protect lives and promote a peaceful holiday season for residents and visitors alike.
