Search Continues for Missing Atok Driver

Police in Apel, under the Sekhukhune District, have intensified their search for a 31-year-old man who was swept away by a flooded river in Atok on Monday night, 1 December 2025.

The incident occurred at approximately 21:30 when a vehicle attempting to cross the river was suddenly overpowered by strong currents. A male passenger managed to escape and was taken to a local clinic for treatment before being discharged.

A large-scale search operation was immediately launched, involving Apel SAPS, the SAPS Search and Rescue Unit, local security services, mine personnel with drone pilots, and EMS teams. Although the missing vehicle was located during the night, rising water levels and unsafe weather conditions made it impossible for rescuers to reach it. The search was halted for safety reasons and resumed on Tuesday morning. The vehicle was later recovered, but the driver remained unaccounted for.

Search and Rescue teams, along with supporting stakeholders, have continued with efforts to locate the missing man as conditions permit.

Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, thanked all involved for their dedication under difficult circumstances. She also urged residents to remain vigilant, especially near rivers during periods of heavy rainfall.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
