Arbor Day: A Celebration of Trees
September 4, 2025The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) has entered into a strategic partnership with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to combine resources and guide young people towards opportunities in higher education.
The collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), represents a significant commitment to expanding educational and developmental opportunities for young South Africans, with particular emphasis on those in rural areas, townships, and informal settlements.
NYDA Executive Chairperson, Dr Sunshine Myende, said the partnership directly addresses the critical skills gap and persistent inequality that continue to hinder youth advancement.
“Data from the NYDA’s Jobs Programme show that the majority of young people live in rural areas, and many do not possess a matric qualification. In response, we initiated this partnership with NSFAS to align efforts, combine resources, and redirect young people towards opportunities in institutions of higher learning,” Myende said.
Key pillars of the partnership
Decentralised access: NSFAS will use the NYDA’s national footprint, turning local offices into walk-in centres for funding applications.
Bridging the digital divide: The agencies are exploring collaborations with telecoms providers to ensure reliable online application processes even in remote areas.
Expanding educational pathways: The partnership will promote Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) opportunities to build a more skilled workforce.
Solving student accommodation: Joint efforts will seek sustainable, innovative solutions to the student housing crisis.
Myende stressed that the collaboration reflects the NYDA Board’s focus on inclusivity and equitable access.
“This partnership marks a pivotal moment in building a more inclusive and prosperous future for South African youth. It is more than a formal agreement; it is a commitment to ensuring that no young person is left behind, regardless of where they live. Through this collaboration, we are opening doors not just to funding, but to opportunity, development, and ultimately dignity,” he said.
The NYDA reaffirmed that the initiative is a cornerstone of its mission to foster holistic youth development across the country.
