August 19, 2026Plans for the construction of a major Smart City development in Bushbuckridge Local Municipality are at an advanced stage, with the project expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy and create much-needed employment opportunities.
A progress meeting was held with Dr Raul Khoza, who is spearheading the Smart City development, together with the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) and key investors to assess the progress made towards bringing the ambitious project to fruition.
The meeting also brought together the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport and Bushbuckridge Local Municipality, highlighting the importance of collaboration between government and the private sector in driving major infrastructure projects.
Discussions focused on key milestones as well as the infrastructure needed to support the development, including a reliable water supply, access roads and essential municipal services.
Stakeholders said aligning government plans with investor priorities is critical to ensuring that the Smart City becomes a sustainable development capable of transforming Bushbuckridge into a centre of economic opportunity.
The project is expected to contribute to economic growth while creating sustainable employment opportunities for communities in the area.
The collaboration between government, investors and other stakeholders is being positioned as a key step towards unlocking the economic potential of Bushbuckridge and contributing to the broader development of Mpumalanga.
