Limpopo police, working alongside various law enforcement agencies and government departments, have arrested 684 suspects and recovered four firearms, more than 43 kilograms of dagga, ammunition and other illegal items during the latest Operation Shanela.
The high-density crime prevention operation was carried out across the province between 13 and 19 July 2026, targeting criminal activity through coordinated law enforcement efforts.
Police conducted high-visibility patrols, roadblocks, stop-and-search operations, the tracing of wanted suspects, and compliance inspections at liquor outlets, second-hand goods dealers, scrapyards, mines, farms, businesses and other identified crime hotspots.
The South African Police Service was supported by the Departments of Home Affairs, Health, Social Development, Correctional Services, SARS, COGTA, Traffic Police, Community Policing Forums, Emergency Medical Services and other law enforcement partners.
The operation resulted in the arrest of suspects for a range of offences, including illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, drug dealing and possession, illegal liquor trading, business and residential robberies, murder, attempted murder, rape, assault, burglary, malicious damage to property, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, immigration-related offences and other crimes.
Among those arrested were:
199 suspects for illegal dealing in liquor.
84 illegal migrants.
58 suspects for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).
49 suspects for possession of drugs.
26 motorists arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
20 suspects for possession of dangerous weapons.
20 suspects for malicious damage to property.
14 suspects for dealing in drugs.
Five suspects for rape.
Five suspects for illegal possession of firearms.
During the operation, police also confiscated a variety of illegal items, including:
Four firearms.
46 rounds of ammunition.
43.45 kilograms of dagga.
16 dangerous weapons.
More than 564 litres of liquor.
Crystal meth (Tik), nyaope, prescription medicine, tobacco products and cash believed to be linked to criminal activities.
Acting Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Jan Scheepers, praised police members and their law enforcement partners for their commitment and coordinated efforts in tackling crime across the province.
Several of the arrested suspects have already appeared before various magistrates’ courts, while others are expected to make their court appearances in the coming days.
