Spain Edge Argentina in Extra Time to Lift Second FIFA World Cup Title
Spain were crowned FIFA World Cup champions for the second time after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in extra time in a tense final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday.
The decisive moment came in the 106th minute when Ferran Torres fired home after connecting with a headed pass from Nico Williams, finally breaking the deadlock in a match dominated by the Spanish side.
The victory ends Argentina’s reign as world champions and denies them the chance to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup title.
Among those celebrating Spain’s triumph were members of the country’s 2010 World Cup-winning squad, who watched from the stands as a new generation etched its name into Spanish football history. Argentina mounted a late surge in the closing minutes, creating two dangerous opportunities in search of an equaliser, but Spain held firm to secure a memorable victory and reclaim football’s biggest prize 16 years after their first World Cup success in 2010.
