926 Suspects Arrested in Crime Crackdown

Limpopo police have arrested 926 suspects and seized firearms, drugs and dangerous weapons during a week-long crime-fighting operation conducted across the province.

The arrests were made between 18 and 24 May as part of Operation Shanela, a high-density policing initiative aimed at tackling serious and violent crime in all five districts of Limpopo.

According to police, the operation resulted in the seizure of seven firearms, 72 rounds of ammunition and 28 dangerous weapons. Large quantities of illegal substances and contraband were also confiscated, including more than 1,300kg of dagga, illegal cigarettes and alcohol.

Among those arrested were suspects linked to serious offences including murder, robbery, rape, assault, burglary, drug-related crimes and the illegal possession of firearms. A total of 400 undocumented foreign nationals were also detained during the operation.

Police recorded 65 arrests for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, 41 for common assault, 35 for illegal liquor trading and 24 for possession of drugs. Additional arrests were made for malicious damage to property, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, burglary and other criminal offences.

As part of the operation, officers inspected 1,397 liquor outlets, searched 124 scrapyards and checked 331 second-hand goods dealers. Authorities also inspected 7,667 informal businesses, including spaza shops, to ensure compliance with labour and other regulations.

More than 12,700 people and nearly 6,000 vehicles were searched during roadblocks, stop-and-search operations and crime-prevention patrols conducted throughout the province. Police also closed 72 unlicensed liquor premises.

The confiscated items included alcoholic beverages, copper pipes, tobacco products, cellphones, a computer and a vehicle believed to be linked to criminal activities.

Provincial Commissioner Thembi Hadebe praised officers for their commitment in the fight against crime.

She commended members of the South African Police Service for their dedication and efforts in ensuring safer communities across Limpopo.

Police said some of the suspects have already appeared in their respective magistrates’ courts, while investigations into other cases continue.
