August 10, 2026The business community in the popular tourism town of Dullstroom, Mpumalanga, is raising concerns that the local economy could face further decline if urgent action is not taken to repair the town’s deteriorating access roads.
The R36 and R540, which are among the main routes connecting Dullstroom to surrounding areas, have deteriorated significantly, making travel increasingly difficult for motorists and tourists visiting the town.
The Dullstroom Business and Tourism Association says the poor condition of the roads is already having a serious impact on tourism and local businesses.
According to the association, more than 10 guest houses have been forced to close, with businesses struggling to attract and retain visitors due to concerns about road conditions.
Dullstroom is well known as a popular getaway destination, attracting tourists with its scenic surroundings, accommodation establishments, restaurants and outdoor activities. However, businesses fear that continued road deterioration could damage the town’s reputation as a tourism destination.
Local businesses are now calling for urgent intervention from the relevant authorities, warning that the longer repairs are delayed, the greater the economic impact will be.
They say repairing the R36 and R540 is not only about improving road safety, but also about protecting jobs, tourism and the livelihoods of businesses that depend on visitors to the town.
The business community is urging authorities to prioritise the roads before more establishments are forced to shut their doors and the local tourism economy suffers further losses.
