Police arrested three suspects early on Tuesday morning as part of seven warrants issued in Limpopo in an investigation into an alleged R10 million insurance murder-for-payout scheme.
Police have widened the probe with five more arrests this week, including a senior education official, according to reports and police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
One suspect was arrested in Sebokeng, Gauteng, on Monday, while others, including two brothers and a sangoma, were arrested in Polokwane on Tuesday morning. Police said more arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
The case centres on former police sergeant Rachel Kutumela, who was arrested in October 2024 while on duty. Authorities allege that life and funeral policies were taken out on at least 10 people who were later killed, with the suspects allegedly benefiting from the insurance payouts.
Kutumela remains in custody with three relatives, including her sister, daughter and elder brother. Earlier court proceedings also resulted in bail being denied to Kutumela, her sister and her daughter, while the matter was transferred to the High Court.
The case has shocked many South Africans because investigators say several of the alleged victims were known to Kutumela and came from vulnerable backgrounds, with some reported to have been disabled or mentally challenged. Police and prosecutors have described the alleged killings as premeditated and part of a carefully organised fraud and murder network.
More suspects are now before the courts and further arrests are expected.
