Ramaphosa Calls For BRICS, G20 Synergy
July 8, 2025Five foreign nationals, aged between 19 and 25, were arrested on 06 July 2025 during a multidisciplinary law enforcement operation known as Operation Vala Umgodi, in the Mpumalanga Province.

The suspects were apprehended at the Middleburg Toll Plaza during routine stop-and-searches conducted by the Combat and Proactive team. They were found to be in contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa after failing to produce valid documentation permitting their stay in the country.
The team intercepted a grey Toyota Quantum minibus with Mozambican registration plates, which was transporting a number of passengers. Upon inspection, five individuals were identified as being in the country unlawfully.

The suspects were immediately arrested and charged, and are expected to appear before the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court in due course.
The arrests form part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement authorities to tackle illegal mining, undocumented migration, and associated criminal activities, particularly in hotspot areas like Middleburg and surrounding mining regions.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the officers involved in the operation for their vigilance and dedication to maintaining the rule of law.

“We remain committed to protecting the integrity of our borders and ensuring that all persons residing within South Africa do so lawfully. Operations such as Vala Umgodi continue to yield significant results,” said Major General Mkhwanazi.
The SAPS has reiterated its appeal to the public to report any suspicious activity related to undocumented individuals, illegal mining, or organised crime to Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or via the MySAPS App.
