Mass Arrests During Limpopo Crime Operation
March 10, 2026The Department of Home Affairs has officially launched a new digital partnership with South Africa’s banking sector; in a move government says could transform how citizens access key services such as Smart ID cards. The system entered its live operational phase on Sunday, 8 March 2026, with the department describing it as one of the most significant reforms in its history.
Under the new model, selected bank branches are now connected directly to Home Affairs through a secure digital gateway. This means qualifying clients can complete a Smart ID application in about five to ten minutes at participating branches, without filling in paper forms or making a booking in advance. Government says the aim is to reduce pressure on Home Affairs offices and bring services closer to where people live and work.
The first phase focuses on people who still hold the green barcoded ID book and want to convert to a Smart ID card, as well as existing Smart ID holders who need re-issues. According to Home Affairs, around 16 million South Africans still rely on the green ID book, which officials say is vulnerable to fraud. Expanding access to Smart IDs is therefore being presented not only as a convenience measure, but also as an important security step.
Capitec and Standard Bank are among the first institutions involved, while First National Bank is reported to be in the final phase of testing. Nine branches began offering the service from Sunday, with 17 expected to be live by the end of the week. Home Affairs has also set a much bigger long-term target: expanding the model to 1,000 bank branches by 2029.
For many communities, including those far from major urban centres, the reform could eventually mean shorter queues, less travel and quicker access to essential documents. Home Affairs says that, as the system stabilises during 2026, it plans to add first-time Smart ID applications, passport services, courier delivery and even applications through banking apps.
