IFP Warns Against Risky Matric Celebrations

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has urged parents and guardians to ensure that matric learners avoid attending the increasingly popular “Pens Down” celebrations, warning that these events often expose young people to significant danger.

The party emphasised that while completing matric is a major milestone, celebrations must be handled responsibly. Concerns include public drinking, drug use, and unsafe environments that place learners at risk. The IFP referenced the tragic loss of 21 young people at the Enyobeni Tavern in June 2022, calling it a sobering reminder of the devastation caused by unsafe festivities.

The party has also noted a growing trend of learners tearing or writing messages on their school uniforms. While it recognises the excitement and symbolic significance behind the practice, the IFP appeals to learners to reserve such activities for old or unusable uniforms. Wearable items should instead be donated to pupils returning to school in 2026.

Parents and families are further encouraged to provide emotional support to matriculants as they wait for their final results. The IFP warns that excessive pressure can lead to heightened stress, anxiety or depression. Observing behavioural changes during this period is vital.

Addressing the Matric Class of 2025, the IFP acknowledged their resilience and commitment throughout a demanding school year. The party encouraged them to celebrate safely, enjoy the festive season responsibly, and seize new opportunities in the coming year — whether through learnerships, volunteering, part-time jobs or work experience.

“Education remains one of the most powerful tools at your disposal. Continue to dream boldly, strive for excellence and walk with purpose,” the statement concluded.
