Motorists Urged to Plan Festive Trips

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has urged motorists to plan ahead and exercise extreme caution as holiday traffic and adverse weather conditions are expected to intensify across the province this weekend.

With schools closing today and the Mapungubwe Festival set to draw thousands to Polokwane on Saturday, 13 December, traffic volumes are expected to surge on major routes, particularly the N1 north towards the Beitbridge border. The department has advised travellers to consider the R101 as a well-maintained alternative to ease congestion.

Motorists are also warned to prepare for difficult driving conditions, as the South African Weather Service has forecast thunderstorms and heavy rain throughout Limpopo. Drivers are encouraged to check the weather before travelling, reduce speed when visibility deteriorates, and avoid driving during severe downpours.

In response to the anticipated increase in road use, the department will intensify its “Phuza Weekend” operations, with heightened law-enforcement visibility on major routes and in residential areas. Officers will target reckless driving, over-loading, unroadworthy vehicles and drunk driving. Motorists caught under the influence will face heavy fines and immediate removal from the road.

Road-safety education will be conducted at rest stops, filling stations and within communities most vulnerable to pedestrian incidents. All road users are urged to avoid alcohol and mobile-phone use while driving, obey speed limits and ensure all occupants, especially children, are properly secured. Pedestrians are advised to use bridges, wear reflective clothing after dark and avoid walking while intoxicated.
