Nineteen Arrested in Taxi Violence Crackdown

Police have made a major breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into violent clashes between rival taxi associations operating along the Giyani–Malamulele route. The conflict, which began in October and continued into December, has resulted in eight criminal cases being opened, including intimidation, robbery and assault.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, four incidents were reported in October, with a further four recorded this month as tensions escalated. In response, the Provincial Taxi Violence Task Team was activated and worked closely with Giyani detectives under the direction of Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection, Major General Samuel Manala.

A joint intelligence-driven operation conducted on Wednesday, 10 December, led to the arrest of 19 men aged between 29 and 55. The suspects are believed to be linked to all eight reported incidents. During the operation, police also seized two patrol vehicles belonging to one of the taxi associations as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the violence, warning that criminal behaviour within the transport sector would not be tolerated, particularly during the festive season when communities depend heavily on taxis for travel.

All 19 suspects remain in custody and are expected to appear in the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 12 December, facing several charges related to the dispute.

Police say visibility will be increased in affected areas and urged taxi associations to resolve their disagreements through lawful and peaceful channels, including engaging the Department of Transport and Community Safety.
