The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has announced that it will redirect R13 billion currently available in its coffers to assist students facing blocked registrations.
The update was delivered in Pretoria on Monday as part of a briefing on the readiness of the 2026 academic year and the status of NSFAS applications.
According to the Department of Higher Education, 34,000 students with blocked registrations and a further 15,000 second-semester students will now be prioritised for funding. The scheme faced challenges earlier this year after miscalculating its available funds by R10 billion, leaving many qualifying students unable to register.
The issue has since been addressed through a reallocation of funds, with the aim of ensuring smooth registration processes ahead of the new academic year. Student accommodation providers who had been impacted by delayed payments are also expected to receive relief following this adjustment.
