Mpumalanga police have opened two inquest dockets following the deaths of a 43-year-old man and his four-year-old nephew, who allegedly died after consuming biscuits taken from a local spaza shop in Witbank.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, 8 July 2026.
According to police, the owner of the tuck shop, a foreign national, had reportedly arranged with his landlord to store stock inside the main house after receiving information about the looting of tuck shops owned by foreign nationals in the area.
It is alleged that the landlord later consumed some of the biscuits and shared them with his four-year-old nephew. Shortly afterwards, both began experiencing dizziness and vomiting.
The pair were rushed to a nearby medical facility, where they were certified dead on arrival.
Police have confirmed that the exact cause of death is still unknown. The source of the biscuits and the circumstances surrounding the deaths will be established through ongoing investigations, including post-mortem examinations.
Authorities have urged members of the public to refrain from consuming food items obtained during incidents of looting, warning that the safety and quality of such products cannot be guaranteed.
Investigations into the incident are continuing.
