Premier Welcomes Report on School Sports Failures

Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has welcomed the findings of a report into the logistical failures experienced during the 2025 National School Sport Championships in Bloemfontein, held from 2 to 5 April 2025.

The report confirms that the Limpopo team endured unacceptable conditions, including inadequate accommodation and allegations that some athletes were forced to sleep on buses. The findings follow widespread complaints from parents and participants, which led to the withdrawal of several teams during the event.

Responding to the concerns earlier this year, Premier Ramathuba immediately ordered an investigation to ensure accountability for what she described as the “dismal treatment” of young athletes. The administration has since produced a comprehensive report, and recommendations are now being put into action.

After receiving the report from MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Mr Jerry Maseko, the Premier expressed strong condemnation of the administrative failures uncovered. She also raised concerns about potential collusion between officials and service providers.

“These findings are deeply troubling and highlight the serious issues that must be addressed to safeguard the interests of our youth,” she said.

Premier Ramathuba reaffirmed the province’s commitment to restoring integrity and professionalism within the sports administration. She noted that the department is implementing corrective steps, including disciplinary action against those implicated, recovering fruitless and wasteful expenditure, and taking legal action where appropriate.

The Premier emphasised the importance of diligence and transparency in managing public funds and confirmed that all individuals involved would be given the opportunity to account for their actions.

Her office said it remains committed to upholding strong governance standards and ensuring that the welfare of young athletes is prioritised.
