Prison Search in Mbombela Uncovers Cellphones and Dagga

A surprise search operation at the Nelspruit Correctional Centre in Mbombela has resulted in the seizure of dozens of cellphones, dagga and other prohibited items, prompting prison authorities to warn about the dangers of contraband inside correctional facilities.

The operation, conducted on 15 July, was carried out by the Barberton Emergency Support Team in partnership with the South African Police Service (SAPS). It was led by Acting Area Co-ordinator for Corrections, Thabang Nyakane, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security and maintain order within correctional centres.

The search forms part of the Barberton Management Area’s broader strategy to eliminate contraband and create a safe, secure environment that supports rehabilitation. It also aligns with the Department of Correctional Services’ national initiative to improve security and enhance public safety across all correctional facilities.

Barberton Management Area spokesperson Opheliah Motlou said the presence of cellphones and illegal drugs in prisons remains a major security concern because such items allow inmates to continue criminal activities from behind bars.

“Unauthorised access to communication devices enables offenders to coordinate criminal operations, intimidate witnesses and interfere with rehabilitation programmes, defeating the purpose of incarceration,” she said.

The operation led to the confiscation of a significant amount of contraband, including:

• 39 cellphones
• Two packets and 80 rolls of dagga
• 31 cellphone accessories
• Four cellphone batteries
• Seven SIM cards
• 19 cellphone chargers
• One set of earpods
• One AUX cable
• One bank card
• R38.70 in cash

Motlou said every item removed from the facility represents a potential security threat that has been eliminated.

She added that while cellphones enable communication with criminal networks outside prison, illegal drugs contribute to violence, debt, gang activity and instability within correctional centres.

Authorities say similar operations will continue as part of ongoing efforts to curb the smuggling of contraband and ensure correctional facilities remain safe, secure and focused on rehabilitation.
