South African National Parks (SANParks) has officially launched a major Road Upgrades Project at Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site in Limpopo, marking a significant step towards improving access, enhancing visitor experience, and strengthening park operations.
The project commenced on Thursday, 13 November 2025, and is funded through the SADC Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCA) Financing Facility, with financial support from the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany under the KfW Development Bank. Implementation is being carried out in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
SANParks received a grant of EUR 600,000 (approximately R11.9 million) to undertake the road upgrades and procure two vehicles that will support daily operations, including law enforcement and anti-poaching patrols. These improvements are expected to enhance accessibility to key heritage interpretation sites within the park, while also enabling quicker operational response times.
This milestone strengthens efforts to preserve Mapungubwe’s rich cultural landscape and natural ecosystems. The park forms part of the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area shared with Botswana and Zimbabwe, a collaborative initiative aimed at boosting biodiversity conservation, heritage protection and sustainable tourism development in the region.
The upgrades affirm SANParks’ ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure, protecting heritage, and ensuring a safe, world-class experience for visitors.
