A week-long multidisciplinary operation targeting illegal mining activities in Pilgrim’s Rest has resulted in the arrest of 105 suspects and the recovery of large quantities of mining equipment and gold-bearing material.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) conducted the disruptive operation between 6 and 12 July 2026 as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining in Mpumalanga.
Among those arrested were 91 undocumented foreign nationals allegedly involved in illegal mining activities.
Police recovered 14 bags of gold-bearing material along with a range of equipment used in illicit mining operations. The seized items included 39 phendukas, seven motors, 201 steel balls, 40 shovels and spades, bags of soil, six gas cylinders, a gold measuring scale, a metal detector and a cutting torch.
Officers also confiscated R16,300 in cash believed to be proceeds from illegal mining.
On 13 July, authorities destroyed a significant portion of the confiscated equipment in accordance with prescribed procedures. The destroyed items included 100 phendukas, six gas cylinders, 15 motors and 40 shovels and spades.
Acting Mpumalanga Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the members who participated in the operation for their commitment to tackling illegal mining. He reaffirmed SAPS’ determination to intensify operations aimed at dismantling criminal syndicates involved in illegal mining and ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.
