August 17, 2026The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) is conducting its 2026 Provincial Week report-back programme, with a focus on following up on commitments and recommendations arising from previous oversight visits.
As part of the programme, the NCOP delegation is undertaking a report-back visit to Thaba Chweu Local Municipality in Mpumalanga to assess progress on issues previously identified during Provincial Week oversight activities.
The visit forms part of Parliament’s broader oversight responsibility to ensure that government departments and municipalities respond to challenges affecting communities and implement agreed interventions.
Thaba Chweu has previously been a key focus of NCOP oversight, particularly around infrastructure, basic service delivery and municipal challenges. During earlier visits, concerns were raised over delayed infrastructure projects, sewer spillages, roads and the condition of public facilities, including Lydenburg Hospital.
For the 2026 report-back, Parliament has made available progress documentation relating specifically to Thaba Chweu Local Municipality, including the municipality’s 2024/25 audit outcomes and a final NCOP progress report dated 4 August 2026.
The follow-up is intended to determine whether commitments made during previous oversight visits have translated into tangible improvements on the ground. It also provides an opportunity for the delegation to engage municipal and provincial authorities on outstanding challenges and identify areas requiring further intervention.
The 2026 Provincial Week programme runs from 18 to 21 August, including engagements with provincial and local government leadership, follow-up visits to selected sites visited during the 2024 and 2025 Provincial Weeks, and provincial debriefing sessions.
The Thaba Chweu visit therefore places renewed emphasis on accountability, service delivery and ensuring that concerns raised by communities are followed through with concrete action.
The NCOP is expected to use the findings from the visit to assess progress and inform further recommendations aimed at improving service delivery in Thaba Chweu Local Municipality and ensuring that government commitments are implemented.
