Breetzke Stars as Proteas Clinch Series at Lord’s

South Africa sealed a thrilling five-run win over England at Lord’s on Thursday, claiming the one-day international series 2-0.

The Proteas posted 330-8, with Matthew Breetzke once again the standout. The 26-year-old made 85, becoming the first batsman in ODI history to begin his career with five consecutive scores of fifty or more. He and Tristan Stubbs (58) shared a vital 147-run stand after South Africa had slipped to 93-3.

England, needing 331 for victory, fought back through Joe Root and Jos Buttler (both 61) and Jacob Bethell (58). Jofra Archer’s late hitting gave them hope, but they fell just short at 325-9.

Nandre Burger led the South African attack with 3-63, while Archer took 4-62 for England. The combined 655 runs set a new ODI record at Lord’s, adding drama to a contest that went down to the final over.

Breetzke, playing only due to Tony de Zorzi’s injury, has now scored 463 runs in five ODIs at an astonishing average of 92.6. The teams meet again in Southampton on Sunday, though South Africa already hold an unassailable lead.
