SARS Seizes R56 Million Cocaine Haul in Durban

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has intercepted a vessel off the east coast of Durban, uncovering a cocaine shipment with an estimated street value of R56 million.

The operation was part of a collaborative, intelligence-driven effort. A Customs Marine Patrol vessel intercepted a cargo ship near the Fairway Buoy, about four nautical miles from Durban, and escorted it to harbour. Customs enforcement officers boarded the vessel, inspecting containers that had been flagged as high risk for smuggling.

Their search revealed 25 large bricks of cocaine concealed within the refrigeration units of several containers. Field tests confirmed the substance as cocaine of exceptionally high quality, suitable for further dilution and illicit distribution.

The seized drugs have been handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for safekeeping, investigation, and prosecution.

SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter credited the success to cooperation with Brazilian authorities. He said this joint effort demonstrated strong collaboration among BRICS nations in the fight against organised crime, while also highlighting the commitment of South African law enforcement agencies to protect the country’s borders.
