Compassion in Action as New Life Begins at Lebombo Border

Acts of humanity and professionalism were on full display at the Lebombo Port of Entry when South African Police Service (SAPS) and South African Revenue Service (SARS) officials assisted in the safe delivery of a baby under unexpected circumstances.

On 30 December 2025, a Mozambican national, Ms Marluz Albino Tovela, who was travelling to Nhambane, went into labour shortly after arriving at the busy port of entry. The situation prompted an urgent call for assistance from the Buzaphi Team to the SAPS office on site.

SAPS officials responded without delay. At around 07:55, a healthy baby boy was successfully delivered with the help of Sergeant Tshidi Mokoena and Constable Sandiso Nyathi of SAPS, alongside Ms Jabu Nkuna from SARS. The officials stepped in as midwives, demonstrating calmness, teamwork and compassion in a moment that required swift action and care.

The newborn, affectionately nicknamed “Baby SAPS and Customs”, arrived safely, much to the relief and joy of all present. Both mother and child were later transported by ambulance to Tonga Hospital, where they received further medical attention. They are reported to be in good health.
