Police in Calcutta have launched a full investigation into a triple murder involving taxi drivers after two separate shooting incidents were reported on Wednesday, 31 December 2025.
The first incident was reported at about 10:00 along the Oakley Trust main road. On arrival, officers found two adult men lying on their backs with no signs of life. Both victims had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were certified dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. Nine empty rifle cartridges were recovered.
Two Quantum taxis, believed to belong to the Mariti Taxi Association, were found at the scene. Preliminary information suggests that the victims were shot outside their vehicles. The motive for the attack remains unknown at this stage. The bodies were transported to a government mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
Approximately an hour later, at about 11:00, police attended to a second shooting incident at Alexandria Trust. Officers found the body of an adult male lying face down in a pool of blood with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. A total of 26 empty rifle cartridges and 11 pistol cartridges were recovered at the scene.
No witnesses came forward to provide information regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident. The deceased is believed to be a taxi driver affiliated with the Mathibela Taxi Association.
Police are appealing to members of the public to assist with information that may lead to the arrest of those responsible. Police investigations into both incidents are continuing.
