November 5, 2025The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo has confirmed the conviction and sentencing of former police constable, Eric Nyadzani Ravhura, who was found guilty of fraud after submitting a fake Grade 12 certificate to secure employment within the police service.
According to SAPS, the 43-year-old Ravhura applied for the 2020 Police Trainee Intake in September 2019. At the time, he was serving as a Police Reservist and was required to submit proof of a Grade 12 or equivalent qualification. He allegedly provided a fraudulent certificate, which enabled him to be accepted into the training programme and later appointed as a Constable at Alldays Police Station.
In June 2021, a verification process by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) revealed that the certificate submitted by Ravhura was not genuine. This discovery led to an internal investigation by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit, which found that SAPS had incurred financial losses related to his salary and training.
The case was subsequently referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), resulting in a warrant of arrest and several court proceedings. On 27 October 2025, the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court found Ravhura guilty of fraud.
He was sentenced on 3 November 2025 to twelve months’ imprisonment or a fine of R30,000, suspended for five years on condition that he does not repeat a similar offence. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers, welcomed the ruling, stating that honesty and integrity remain core values within SAPS and that the organisation will continue to act decisively against misconduct and corruption within its ranks.
