NPA to Conduct Independent Investigation After Matlala Withdraws Plea Agreement.
July 13, 2026What began as an investigation into a suspected stolen vehicle led to a disturbing discovery in Naledi, Soweto, where police uncovered what are believed to be human organs during a raid on a residential property.
Officers from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) acted on intelligence regarding a vehicle allegedly being stripped at a home on Nape Street on Thursday evening, 11 July 2026.
During the operation, police recovered a white Volkswagen Caddy belonging to the National Department of Health that had reportedly been hijacked and was being dismantled inside the property’s garage.
While searching the premises, tactical officers made a shocking discovery after finding two buckets containing what are believed to be human hearts and lungs. Investigators also recovered pathology-related documents allegedly linked to Forensic Pathology Services.
Two men were arrested at the scene. One of the suspects was reportedly found hiding in the yard. They are expected to face charges relating to the possession of a hijacked vehicle and the unlawful possession of suspected human organs.
Police have seized both the recovered organs and the hijacked vehicle as part of the investigation.
Authorities are now working to determine the origin of the organs, identify any potential victims, establish the ownership of the property, and investigate whether the case is linked to murder, illegal organ trafficking, or other criminal activities.
No victims have been identified at this stage, and police say investigations are continuing.
The discovery has shocked residents of Naledi and the wider Soweto community. Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact the nearest police station or the Crime Stop hotline.
