An assault case has been opened with Mankweng police after murder accused Malesela Andrew Mehlape alleged that five prison officials assaulted him while in custody.
Mehlape appeared in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on 29 August with what seemed to be a broken arm. He told the court that his pleas for help were ignored when he tried to report the incident.
It was only after he raised the matter with Magistrate Ashrad Chayya that steps were taken. The magistrate ordered that an assault case be registered and postponed the murder trial to 26 September.
Mehlape is accused of killing his 14-year-old stepdaughter, Rebotile Penelope Moloto, who was fatally stabbed and had her throat slit in March while on her way to Klaas Mothapo High School.
Despite the gravity of the charges, Mehlape has refused legal representation and insists on representing himself. The Directorate of Public Prosecutions confirmed it is still considering his request, noting that self-representation in such serious matters is rare.
The courtroom was filled with community members, some supporting the victim’s family while others followed proceedings with keen interest. Opinions were split on Mehlape’s behaviour — some saw it as a delaying tactic, while others believed his injuries were genuine.
The Department of Correctional Services has not yet commented on the allegations. Mehlape remains in custody until his next appearance.
