Polokwane Municipality Commits Millions to Football

Polokwane Municipality has allocated more than R240 million over the next two years to support four major football clubs – Kaizer Chiefs, Sekhukhune United, Magesi and Polokwane City – for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 financial years.

Each club is set to receive R30 million in the first year and R31.6 million in the second year. In return, the municipality will take full control of gate takings from all home matches played in Polokwane.

Matches will be hosted at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, with the old Peter Mokaba and the recently upgraded Seshego Stadium serving as alternative venues. Seshego now meets Premier Soccer League standards and can accommodate up to 5,500 spectators.

The municipality maintains that increased use of these stadiums will boost economic activity by attracting visitors from other provinces, stimulating the hospitality and retail sectors, and creating opportunities for both small and large businesses.

However, concerns have been raised about the scale of spending and the level of transparency in managing funds. Calls have been made for greater accountability and for regular reporting on income from ticket sales and related revenue.
