Djokovic and Alcaraz Set for US Open Semi-Final as Sabalenka Progresses
September 3, 2025The newly elected ANC Waterberg regional chairperson, Jack Maeko, has criticised former provincial chairperson Stanley Mathabatha for citing issues in the Waterberg region as part of his decision to step aside.
Mathabatha announced his resignation in a letter to ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula earlier this week, stating that he wanted to protect his reputation and integrity. He attributed his decision to what he described as unethical conduct and questionable practices linked to the Vhembe and Waterberg regional elective conferences.
During the closing session of the Waterberg regional conference in Bela Bela, Maeko expressed his dissatisfaction with Mathabatha’s explanation, arguing that such matters should not be used as justification for stepping down. He urged leaders to take responsibility for their choices without attaching blame to regional conferences.
Maeko also declared his support for Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba as a potential successor to Mathabatha. He highlighted the historical precedent of provincial premiers going on to become ANC provincial chairpersons, suggesting that Ramathuba could follow in that tradition.
Speculation continues to grow around the leadership contest, with both Ramathuba and ANC Peter Mokaba regional chairperson and Polokwane Mayor, John Mpe, seen as frontrunners for the position.
