Orpen Road Closed After Collapse

Motorists are urged to take caution following the full closure of the R531-2 (Orpen Road) after a road collapse near the Wits Rural Facility on Monday morning.

According to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, the affected section has been declared unsafe and impassable. Law enforcement officers and technical teams have since been deployed to the scene to assess the damage and manage traffic.

The closure has disrupted travel between Mpumalanga and Limpopo, particularly for those travelling to and from the Kruger National Park via Orpen Gate.

Motorists travelling from Mpumalanga are advised to use the R40 towards Hoedspruit to bypass the damaged section. Those exiting through Orpen Gate are encouraged to reroute via Phalaborwa to reconnect with their intended destinations.

Authorities have warned road users to expect delays and congestion along these alternative routes. Drivers are urged to strictly obey all road signage and follow instructions from traffic officials on site.

Road users are also advised to reduce speed, avoid unnecessary overtaking, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on longer detours. Night travel should be avoided where possible due to increased risks, including poor visibility and the presence of pedestrians or animals.

Officials have strongly cautioned the public against attempting to approach or cross the collapsed section, describing it as highly unstable and dangerous.

The department has apologised for the inconvenience and confirmed that updates will be provided as soon as it is safe to reopen the road.
