Public Protector Probes President’s Conduct Allegations
November 27, 2025Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the Hlati family following the passing of Dr Sylvester Mbayimbayi Hlati, a revered traditional healer and respected community leader.
Dr Hlati, known across the province and beyond for his lifelong dedication to African traditional medicine, leaves behind a legacy of more than four decades of service, advocacy and leadership. He founded the Mhlabuhlangene School of African Medicine and the Southern African Development Community Unified Ancestors Traditional Practitioners Association (SADC UAM), institutions that continue to influence the growth and recognition of traditional healing practices across Southern Africa.
In her message of sympathy, Premier Ramathuba said the provincial government stands with the family, friends, colleagues and all who were shaped by Dr Hlati’s work. She noted that his legacy remains firmly rooted in the history of both Limpopo and the country.
Dr Hlati’s contribution to society reached far beyond his professional field. He championed ethical practice in traditional medicine, led campaigns against ritual killings, and was a strong advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness. He also played a crucial role in addressing misconceptions about rhino poaching and gender-based violence, working tirelessly to bridge the gap between traditional and modern health systems.
The Limpopo Provincial Government joins communities across the nation in mourning a towering figure in African traditional medicine and celebrates the enduring impact of his commitment to cultural preservation, public health and community upliftment.
