Public Protector Probes President’s Conduct Allegations

The Office of the Public Protector has confirmed it will launch a formal investigation into alleged breaches of the Executive Ethics Code following a submission by the MK Party. The confirmation was issued on Monday after the office assessed the complaint and found sufficient grounds to proceed with an inquiry into possible violations of clauses relating to abuse of power, improper conduct, acting inconsistently with constitutional responsibilities, and failing to act in the best interests of the Republic.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the MK Party welcomed the development, describing it as an important step towards accountability for what it views as ongoing ethical concerns during President Cyril Ramaphosa’s administration. The party stated that it regards the investigation as vital for restoring public confidence in the Presidency and ensuring that all elected leaders are subject to the same standards of accountability.

The party also raised broader concerns about what it considers the weakening of oversight institutions and the alleged misuse of state resources to shield the President and those close to him. It referenced longstanding issues, including the Phala Phala matter and other governance challenges, arguing that South Africans are entitled to transparent and ethical leadership.

According to the Public Protector’s office, the decision to investigate follows a thorough assessment of the MK Party’s submission, which was deemed to provide adequate grounds for inquiry. The MK Party indicated that it will closely monitor the progress of the investigation and continues to emphasise the need for transparency and ethical governance in the highest office of the country.
