Government Moves to Tighten University Oversight
October 30, 2025Ekuqaleni Genesis Farm from Botleng, in Mpumalanga, is among the many community food gardens invited to enter the inaugural Shoprite Act For Change Food Garden Competition, where R1 million in tailored support forms part of the prize for gardens that fight hunger and uplift neighbourhoods. Community food gardens across South Africa are encouraged to enter.
Shoprite has launched the first-ever Act For Change Food Garden Competition, shining a light on community food gardens across South Africa and offering prizes worth R1 million in tailored support.
From rooftops to rural villages, schoolyards to township corners, food gardens are bringing people together, tackling hunger, and building sustainable livelihoods. Shoprite’s new competition aims to celebrate these local heroes and strengthen their work.
Over the past ten years, Shoprite has invested in almost 300 food gardens. These gardens produced more than 106 000 kg of fresh vegetables last year while also helping people learn farming skills and earn an income from selling surplus produce.
The competition is open to all community food gardens in South Africa. Winners will receive support based on their specific needs – including irrigation systems, fencing, shade netting, or training.
Prizes include:
- 1st prize: Support valued at R225 000
- 2nd prize: R200 000
- 3rd prize: R170 000
- 4th prize: R150 000
- 5th prize: R130 000
- 6th prize: R120 000
Why it matters
Food gardens remain vital as many South African households still struggle with food access and affordability. Beyond providing meals, they uplift communities by building skills, fostering cooperation, and promoting healthier eating.
