Community United Against Violence in Mankweng
December 4, 2025Police in Calcutta have launched an investigation into a case of attempted murder and an inquest following a late-night shooting near a crèche on Tuesday, 2 December 2025.
According to authorities, officers were called to the scene at around 20:55, where they found a 19-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound. She was still alive when police arrived and was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.
A 20-year-old man, believed to be known to the victim, was discovered lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head. Emergency medical personnel certified him dead at the scene. A firearm was recovered and seized for further forensic analysis.
Police say domestic violence cannot be ruled out, with preliminary findings suggesting the man allegedly shot the young woman before turning the weapon on himself. The full circumstances remain under active investigation.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, strongly condemned the incident, calling it a painful reminder of the devastating impact of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF).
“We condemn this senseless act of violence and the scourge of GBVF that continues to plague our society. As we observe the 16 Days of Activism against Women and Children, we reiterate our commitment to creating a society where women and children can live without fear,” he said.
Police are urging the community to continue reporting incidents of domestic abuse and to seek help before conflicts escalate to tragedy.
